Wonky Disco

Wonky Disco, Club Coliseum, Vauxhall.Wonky Disco

6 February 2009

With ‘Play It Loud’ still ringing in my ears I can certainly say that my trip to Wonky was one bizarre, and excitingly fresh, experience. Wonky Disco is an event based in London and which comprises high quality acts from the psychedelicWords: Will Poole

area of the dance music scene.

The latest adventure took place throughout a number of rooms at the Coliseum in Vauxhall. The largest room (the Wonkiest room of the lot) featured body-rocking psytrance blaring out of the speakers – this was the Wonky Disco stage. In here were some of the highest quality acts within the scene – Headroom, Commercial Hippies, Avalon and Morganism were just some of the highlights. The décor was incredible and it really was quite hard to stop yourself getting sucked into the mesmerising tapestry draped on the walls.

The infamous Arch Angel ran the second dance room, specialising in the subgenre now known to be psybreaks. This is breakbeat made up of deep and dirty psychedelic sounds and is nothing short of exceptional. If you’re like me and occasionally enjoy a break (sic) from the monotonous beat of psytrance but love those weird and wonderful psy sounds, then psybreaks is definitely for you and there was no better place to listen to it than here. With not two, not three but eight lasers flickering overhead, some of the best acts within this new subgenre rocked the room. With acts like Far Too Loud, ILS, Hedflux and Freshold banging it out I was reluctant to leave and investigate the club further.

IMG_1300Those that managed to drag themselves away and escape were treated to a smaller but no less enjoyable room that was playing all forms of dub. In here you could relax a little, talk crap to other friendly partygoers and sit back to soak up the lazy beats, before heading back out into the noise.

Wonky Disco blew all my expectations out of the water and, dare I say, really was one of the best club nights – musically at least – that I had been to this year.

The next Wonky Disco event will be on the
5th of June at Waveform in the City at
Club Colosseum, 11pm till 9am London
